According to the victim’s family, a ninth fatality of the Astroworld Festival stampede died after clinging to life for five days in a Texas hospital.
Many people were hospitalized after attending Astroworld on Friday, November 5. Bharti Shahani was one of them.
At Houston Methodist Hospital, Shahani apparently showed no signs of cerebral activity.
According to KTRK, Shahani attended the Houston event with her sister Namrata Shahani and cousin Mohit Bellani, but they became separated amid the crowd surge.
Touchaheart Nigeria reports that Shahani, a senior at Texas A&M University, died on November 11 from injuries incurred at the event, according to his family attorney.
Shahani, who had three heart attacks during the crowd surge, was put on a ventilator with no brain activity immediately after arriving at the hospital, according to ABC13.
Bellani, the deceased’s cousin, described her experience at the occasion as follows: “Once one person fell, people started toppling like dominos. It was like a sinkhole. People were falling on top of each other.
“There were like layers of bodies on the ground, like two people thick. We were fighting to come up to the top and breathe to stay alive.”
At the sold-out festival, which drew 50,000 attendees, nine people died and about 300 were injured.
On Thursday, two more people, including a 9-year-old kid, were believed to be in critical condition.
Travis Scott has released two statements following the tragedy, promised refunds to attendees, and said he will cover the funeral costs for the families of the initial eight people who died.
Drake, who performed with Scott as the crowd surged, also released a statement regarding Astroworld, writing, “My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering.”
