The Federal Government Takes A Stand Against An Attack On Nigerians At A Togolese Airport

The federal government has condemned the recent attack on some Nigerians who were passing through Togo’s Gnassigbe Enyeama International Airport on their way to Nigeria.

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that the Nigerians were manhandled by Togolese security personnel in a video that went viral over the weekend. According to the travelers, they flew from the United States to Nigeria and had to change planes in Togo. They were told by Ethiopian airline officials that the plane was full and that they would not be able to continue their journey. Nigerians were enraged, and they began protesting. Togolese security agents stormed in and arrested them en masse.

Nigerians who saw the video were outraged at how the travelers were treated.

The Nigerian Embassy in Lome, Togo, expressed its displeasure with the host country over the mistreatment of Nigerians, calling it “completely unacceptable” and “not in compliance with international best practices.”

The situation is being resolved, according to Nigeria’s Ambassador to Togo, Debo Adesina, who claimed in a statement that the matter is being addressed through sustained efforts by the mission in its engagement with relevant Togolese officials. He claimed that as soon as the event was reported, he and his officials went to the airport on Saturday to take care of the situation until it was addressed and all of the passengers were safely evacuated on two aircraft.

The situation was addressed Saturday night, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Esther Sunsuwa, and the passengers were transported to Nigeria the same night.
