I Have Resolved To Never Join A Political Party- Obasanjo

On Saturday, January 22, former President Olusegun Obasanjo assured officials of the Peoples Democratic Party that he will never return to the opposition party where he was elected President of Nigeria for two terms.

When he had a falling out with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in the run-up to the 2015 election, Obasanjo resigned from the party.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo told the PDP’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, and other stakeholders who paid him a visit in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday that he had no intention of returning to partisan politics or the PDP.

Former Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), and Donald Duke are among the members of the squad (Cross River).

Following a closed-door meeting, Obasanjo addressed a wider gathering of PDP stakeholders, admitting that despite having led Nigeria twice on the PDP platform, the party will remain a part of his legacy.

He said;

“I’m no longer involved in party politics, and nothing can bring me back.” I shall always be available to anyone who seeks my opinion in the best interests of Nigeria.

“Whatever I do in my personal life, PDP will continue to be a part of my life because I was elected president on the platform of PDP.” Since the day I tore my PDP card, I have no longer been a member of PDP. That day, I resolved to never join a political party.

“I intend to remain a statesman.”

Obasanjo also told Ayu that the PDP’s and Nigeria’s troubles are on his shoulders, and he prayed that God would grant him the wisdom to carry them.

“If you leave PDP, the blood of PDP will never leave you,” Ayu responded to Obasanjo. He stated that the party would always seek his fatherly guidance on Nigerian administration.

Ayu also praised Obasanjo for his commitment to the country’s progress, unity, and development, saying, “What we have currently falls short of the leadership Nigeria deserves.”
