Bola Tinubu, a mainstay of the All Progressives Congress and a presidential candidate, attended Chicago State University, according to the university.
In a terse email answer to The PUNCH on Tuesday, Beverly Poindexter, who is in charge of official transcript requests, enrolment, and degree verification at CSU’s Office of the Registrar, said this.
“Mr Tinubu did attend our university,” Poindexter said, “but if more information is needed, go to studentclearinghouse.org to submit a formal request.”
Tinubu was a student at the institution between 1977 and 1979, according to a letter written by then-Registrar Lois Davis dated August 20, 1999.
“Please be advised that Bola A. Tinubu attended Chicago State University from August 1977 to June 1979,” he wrote. On June 22, 1979, he received a Bachelor of Science in Business and Administration with honors. Accounting was his major.”
A letter from CSU commending Tinubu’s performance and “excellent scholastic success” was also attached to Tinubu’s form CF004 filed to the Independent National Electoral Commission during his re-election bid in 2003.
Tinubu’s academic credentials have been a source of contention for more than a decade.
According to a recent viral post, Tinubu was expelled from all of the schools he claimed to have attended.
Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), a human rights lawyer, had also cast doubt on Tinubu’s credentials and sued the Nigeria Police Force for neglecting to investigate him.
Tinubu could not be prosecuted by the police alleged certificate fraud, the Supreme Court declared on May 10, 2002.
The top court also decided that Gani could not compel the Inspector-General of Police to probe Tinubu for alleged certificate fraud because he was immune at the time.
