Officials say a bridge in Pittsburgh collapsed on Friday morning, January 28, sending four automobiles and a public bus plunging into a park below.
Ten people were injured and four were sent to surrounding hospitals, according to CBS Pittsburgh, although none of the injuries were life-threatening.
At the collapse scene, Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman told CBS Pittsburgh, “This might have been much worse.” A snowstorm, according to Fetterman, delayed the start of school and kept people off the roadways.
Vehicles were stacked up among the rubble in images from the area. Officials claimed in a statement that gas lines running along the bridge ruptured, creating a massive leak and that the lines were switched off.
According to the statement, five automobiles and an Allegheny County Port Authority bus were on the flyover when it collapsed into Frick Park below at roughly 6:40 a.m. Crews were checking the area for anyone who might have been in the park at the time of the collapse.
According to Mayor Ed Gainey, the bridge was last inspected in September. Authorities were investigating what caused the collapse, which occurred only hours before President Biden was set to speak about infrastructure and other topics in the neighborhood, according to Fire Chief Darryl Jones.
Gainey told reporters, “With him coming today to talk about this infrastructure measure, to address why this financing is so necessary, today is significant.” “… We could have ended up with some catastrophic injuries at the end of the day.”
The collapse was reacted to by police, firefighters, and emergency medical care teams, and the Red Cross has been notified to assist casualties, according to safety officials.
Governor Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania stated that he is monitoring the situation and that locals should avoid the area.
