Buhari Has Accomplished What America Is Striving To Accomplish- Babatunde Fashola

Following a backlash over his claim that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is outperforming the US in infrastructure development, Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola has issued a clarification.

At an All Progressives Congress (APC) meeting in Kano on Thursday, January 27, the Minister was cited as claiming that the Buhari-led administration has accomplished what America “is striving to do in terms of infrastructure.”

On Friday, January 28, while visiting the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road project, Babatunde Fashola clarified:

“The first thing to make is that I didn’t claim Nigeria’s infrastructure is better than America’s infrastructure because everyone who knows what they’re doing knows that America is a lot wealthier country, and their infrastructure is much ahead of Nigeria’s.”

“What I was talking about at the APC youth presentation was infrastructure difficulties, and how they are universal; every country commits to infrastructure as a legitimate method to create jobs, expand the economy, and distribute wealth, as we have seen here.” That is the first point I’d want to make.

“And that in a democracy, you always need parliament to approve infrastructure spending.” So, I was drawing the analogy that Buhari was able to persuade his parliament to approve his spending, which is why we can come here today.

“However, the American administration is having difficulty obtaining approval from their parliament to do what we are currently doing.” I never said that their infrastructure was superior to theirs.”
