ASUU Demands N1 Trillion From  FG To Suspend The Current Strike

ASUU has sought N1 trillion from the Federal Government to halt its strike.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Nigerian government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, for a one-trillion-naira payment to terminate its strike.

On Valentine’s Day, 2022, ASUU launched a four-week “complete and entire” strike, according to this internet news portal.

After the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting dubbed ‘NEC for NEC,’ ASUU National President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke announced the one-month strike to journalists on Monday in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The ASUU President stated that the strike will begin on Monday, February 14, 2022, and would last for four weeks at first.

The Asuu strike was called after members of the union’s National Executive Council attended continuous meetings at the University of Lagos themed “NEC for NEC.”

Nigeria has 49 federal institutions, 54 state-owned universities, and 109 private universities. Federal institutions are currently on strike, although certain state-owned colleges are not, for the simple reason that several of ASUU’s primary demands are exclusive to federal universities.

The issue of insufficient education finance, like the need for improved salaries and other working conditions, affects all public colleges.

The challenges of revitalization money and the contentious Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, or IPPIS, are, however, unique to federal universities because the FG utilizes IPPIS to pay its employees and provides revitalization funds to its institutions.

The development of universities has an impact on both federal and state institutions, as some state governments, such as Abia and Delta, who are struggling to fund one university, are creating additional.

The demands of ASUU have financial ramifications in the billions of naira range. According to an agreement struck by the FG and the union, the government will spend N200 billion annually for the next five years on the sector’s revitalization.

The Federal Government needs to cough up N1 trillion to meet this portion of the ASUU demand; yet, the most it has done recently is release N30 billion as a symbol of commitment.

ASUU stated on Twitter on Sunday afternoon, February 27, 2022, that the Federal Government must pay N1 trillion to end the ongoing ASUU strike, a post that has sparked significant reactions from Nigerians.
