Russia Ukraine War: 13 Latest Update To Know, As Turkey Seeks Russia’s Help
More than two weeks after President Vladimir Putin ordered his army over the borders of its pro-Western neighbor, Russia declared Sunday that negotiators were making progress in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Turkey had requested Russia’s assistance in evacuating its citizens stranded in Mariupol.
The following are the most recent developments in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine:
According to local authorities, more than 2,100 inhabitants of Ukraine’s besieged city of Mariupol have been murdered since hostilities began, an increase of about 1,000 since Wednesday.
At a Russian border, a convoy of supplies headed for the key southern port, where inhabitants have been without running water and power for nearly two weeks, is halted.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) cautions that if the warring parties do not establish a “concrete humanitarian accord” soon, Mariupol will face a “worst-case situation.”
According to local reports, Russian troops conduct air strikes on a military training area outside Ukraine’s western city of Lviv, close the NATO member Poland’s border, killing 35 people and injuring more than 130.
As Russian forces get closer to the capital, fighting rages in the Kyiv outskirts. According to the Ukrainian president’s administration, only highways to the south remain available, and Kyiv is preparing to conduct a “relentless defense.”
According to Ukrainian soldiers on the ground, Russian forces control all of Bucha to the northwest, as well as sections of Irpin.
Russia says that an airstrike it carried out in Ukraine, near the Polish border, killed “180 foreign mercenaries” who had joined Kyiv’s army in its fight against Russia.
Medics and witnesses believe a US journalist was shot and killed in Irpin, making him the first foreign journalist murdered since Russia’s intervention. Brent Renaud, a 50-year-old video documentary producer, was identified by papers recovered on the reporter’s body.
Following numerous rounds of discussions hosted on the border of neighboring Belarus to resolve the violence, Leonid Slutsky, a senior member of Russia’s negotiating team, believes “substantial progress” has been made.
Turkey has requested assistance from Russia in evacuating its residents stranded in Mariupol, according to Ankara’s Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Pope Francis calls for a stop to the “massacre” in Ukraine, stating that attacks on civilians are unjustifiable.
According to the regional governor, eleven persons were killed in an attack on the southern city of Mykolaiv. The city is located on the route leading to the port city of Odessa, which is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.
In the eastern Donbas region, where a separate air raid on a monastery sheltering civilians wounds 30 people, a top Ukrainian police commander accuses Russia of employing phosphorus chemical munitions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims “about 1,300” Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the invasion began, the first time he has offered a figure for the country’s forces. On March 2, Russia announced the loss of 498 soldiers, while Zelensky claims the number is closer to 12,000 men.
According to the UN, at least 579 Ukrainian citizens have been murdered, however the true number is likely much higher.
Over 800 people have been detained by Russian police in 37 towns for opposing Moscow’s “military operations” in Ukraine.
According to the UN, about 2.7 million people have fled the conflict in Ukraine, with over 100,000 of them fleeing in the last 24 hours. More than half of the students have chosen to study in Poland.
