Rare Monkeypox Infection Case Reported In UK

A person in England has been diagnosed with a rare viral monkeypox virus, which health officials believe is linked to travel to West Africa.

In a statement, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) stated the case, which involved an individual who had recently been to Nigeria, was being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London’s specialised respiratory infectious disease unit.

“It is important to emphasise that monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low,” said Colin Brown, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA.

Monkeypox is a rare viral virus that is closely related to human smallpox, which was eliminated in 1980. Monkeypox is much milder than smallpox, and most affected people recover in a few weeks, although it can be fatal in rare situations.
