Buhari Signs The Electoral Act Amendments Of 2022

Buhari Signs The Electoral Act Amendments Of 2022

According to a lawmaker, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the recently modified 2022 electoral statute into law on Saturday afternoon.

The 2022 electoral legislation barred members of the House of Representatives, Senate, and other officials from voting in their parties’ primary, which has been a source of conflict for some time.

Following the omission, the Senate and House of Representatives held emergency sessions last week to alter the act, allowing statutory delegates to vote and be voted for in upcoming political party primaries and conventions.

However, with only a few days until the primaries, legislators are putting pressure on the president to sign it in order to avoid a catastrophe.

Emeka Chinedu, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Ahiazu/ Ezinihittee Mbaise federal district, informed BusinessDay that the law was finally signed today, May 21.

“I can confirm to you that Mr President signed the bill into law this afternoon and we are all happy about it as it will give us and other statutory delegates the power to vote at the primaries,” Chinedu said.

“The amendment was swiftly done by the national assembly members to legally provide a place in the Act for statutory delegates of political parties to vote during their congresses and conventions.

“It will indeed do a lot of good for the upcoming party primaries.”

The presidency is yet to confirm the signing.
