Court To Rule On Baba Ijesha’s bail request, See Details

The actor Baba Ijesha, who was found guilty of sexual assault, filed a post-conviction bail application. The Ikeja Special Offenses Court in Lagos has set September 19 as the date for its decision.

On June 24, 2021, Baba Ijesha was charged with six counts, including sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault by penetration.

After being found guilty of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and indecent treatment of a juvenile, the court sentenced him to 16 years in jail.

However, counts one and six, which were sexual assault by penetration and attempted sexual assault by penetration, were dropped and he was found not guilty.

However, the actor had filed an appeal against the ruling with the Lagos division of the court of appeals through his attorney, Chukwudi Adiukwu.

The troubled actor also requested post-conviction bail from the court, which was granted, while his appeal was being heard.

Adiukwu argued that the actor’s request for post-conviction bail complied with section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution as amended at the court hearing on Wednesday.

The defense attorney further contended that the court may allow his client to bail either unconditionally or subject to reasonable conditions under section 51 of the administration of criminal justice law (ACJL), 2015.

The prosecution’s attorney, Omowunmi Bajulaye-Bishi, however, contested the actor’s request for release.

According to Bajulaye-Bishi, the actor’s attorney failed to substantiate the unusual conditions required by the legislation governing the administration of criminal justice.

The defense attorney urged the judge to reject the bail request and let the defendant’s punishment run its course.

Oluwatoyin Taiwo, the judge presiding over the case, postponed it until Monday after hearing arguments from both parties.
