Qatar 2022: Morocco becomes first African nation to get to World Cup semifinals

Morocco made history on Saturday, December 10 at the Al Thumama Stadium by defeating Portugal 1-0 to become the first African country to advance to the World Cup semifinals.

When Youssef En-Nesyri outjumped Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa to poke the ball in, he gave Morocco the lone goal in the first half.

Morocco has advanced further than the other three African nations to do so: Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Five-time Awarded the Ballon d’Or Fernando Santos replaced Ronaldo early in the second half, but he was unable to save the Euro 2016 champions. Ronaldo started the second straight game from the bench.

Morocco will take on the winners of blockbuster France vs England match in the semifinals on Dec. 14.
