Touchaheart Nigeria reports that organizations operating across all industries in the nation have been urged to offer chances that enable women to realize their full potential for the sake of society.

Adedoyin Odunfa, CEO of Digital Jewels, made the call while serving as a guest speaker at a webinar last week in Lagos that Polaris Bank Limited organized with the theme “Advancing Women Empowerment through the Adoption of Technological Innovation and Digital Education” in honor of the 2023 International Women’s Day.

When discussing the gender gap in the workplace and the IWD 2023 topic of #EmbraceEquity, Odunfa referenced data showing that women make up only 46% of the workforce and that less than 25% of them end up in leadership roles.

She emphasized the necessity of addressing gender inequality and current prejudices against women, both conscious and unconscious. She also underlined the necessity of actively empowering women through technical advancement as opposed to merely paying lip service to the issue.

Having more women in the workforce to develop goods and services that empower women, in Odunfa’s opinion, is one method to provide these chances. She also emphasized the necessity of designing financial services and products specifically with women in mind in order to make them more relevant, accessible, and cheap.

In order to do this, Odunfa urged increased financial knowledge, education spending, and training for gender equity in the workforce and markets. Two other panelists during the webinar, Ededayo Durosinmi-Etti, CEO of Herconomy, and Chinyelu Chikwendu, a Director of Vatebra TechHub, agreed with this statement.

Dr. (Mrs.) Amina Sambo-Magaji, an AI expert, researcher, and tech policy maker who also participated in the event as a panelist, underlined the importance of collaboration and a systemic approach to advancing gender equality in the digital sphere.

The illustrious Humphrey Fellow Dr. Sambo-Magaji, who also serves as the Director of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), urged for actions to encourage women’s involvement in all facets of digital life, including as technological innovation and digital governance. She stressed the requirement for laws that actively advance gender equality and enable women to participate as partners, consumers, and innovators in science and technology.

Earlier, Bukola Oluyadi, Group Head of Customer Experience Management & Sustainability at Polaris Bank, discussed the rationale behind the Webinar’s organization;

“The goal of this event is to address the various challenges faced by Women in diverse professions, identify skill gaps needed to be addressed, and how technology, innovation, and digital education can be leveraged to empower the woman so that Gender equity can be felt more in our economy.”

According to Oluyadi,

“Polaris Bank is committed to Women Empowerment, and consciously raising awareness on gender equity and ensure that no woman is financially excluded, or is disadvantaged in any way.“

In Quote,

“Only 30 percent of commercial banks in Nigeria have over 30 percent female representation on their board and Polaris Bank is one of such banks. The Bank is also supporting women-led businesses with single-digit interest loans in celebrating IWD 2023 and women’s month. The Bank is also driving women empowerment internally by inaugurating its Women’s Network this month”, she disclosed.
