17 Killed in Bangladesh Bus Crash

On Sunday, a bus crashed through a highway fence and into a roadside ditch in Bangladesh, leaving at least 17 passengers dead and up to 25 others hurt.

Authorities believe the bus’s driver lost control around 8:00 am (0200 GMT) and collided with the railing of a freshly constructed major freeway, sending the vehicle plummeting 30 feet (10 meters) into the ditch.

“In the accident, seventeen persons died. The injured were sent to nearby hospitals, according to local police head Masud Alam, who spoke to AFP following the collision in the southern area of Shibchar.

Bangladesh has a high rate of traffic accidents because of the country’s outdated, poorly maintained roadways, as well as its underqualified drivers.

9,951 fatalities in road accidents were a record in Bangladesh last year, according to a highway accident monitor.
