Senate Investigates Firearms Abuse by Nigeria Customs

In a significant move towards ensuring accountability and safeguarding the lives of citizens, the Nigerian Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution to investigate the alleged abuse of firearms by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The resolution follows a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, representing Katsina Central senatorial district, who expressed deep concern over the reported killings of citizens in Katsina State by armed Customs officers.

Touchaheart Nigeria reports on the urgency and significance of this investigation and the quest for improved firearms training within the NCS.

Addressing Incessant Killings

Senator Yar’Adua’s motion, titled “Urgent Need to Investigate the Abuse of Firearms by Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, in Katsina State,” highlights the alarming rise in cases of killings within the state.

He emphasizes the necessity of considering these incidents as completely unacceptable, stressing the urgent need for comprehensive firearms training for officers in order to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

Countering Smugglers and Ensuring Civil Conduct

Customs officers are authorized to bear arms to effectively combat the activities of smugglers, who have become increasingly audacious and are resorting to the use of sophisticated weapons.

However, it is crucial for these officers to exercise restraint and civility in their interactions with Nigerian citizens.

Senator Yar’Adua reminds us that the primary duty of the NCS is to protect the people, and any form of excessive force resulting in civilian casualties is a grave breach of this responsibility.

Instances of Misconduct

Highlighting specific incidents, the senator recalls a distressing episode involving Customs officers near Gorar Yammama Highway.

Indiscriminate shooting by the officers at a vehicle carrying the Chief of Staff to the governor, along with aides and close family members, brings to the fore the urgency of addressing the issue at hand.

Such acts of violence not only endanger innocent lives but also undermine public trust and confidence in the NCS.

Senate’s Commitment to Accountability

Taking swift action, Senate President Godswill Akpabio constituted a committee to investigate the alleged abuse of firearms by NCS officers.

The committee, chaired by Senator Francis Fadahunsi, comprises esteemed senators from various political parties, underscoring the bipartisan commitment to resolving this critical issue.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Akpabio emphasized that the Senate will not tolerate any further loss of innocent lives and seeks a holistic examination of the matter.
