Nigerian Flag Designer, Pa Akinkunmi Passes On

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that Pa. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR), the creator of the Nigerian flag, has passed away.

At 93 years old, Pa. Akinkunmi died early on Tuesday after a short illness.

The news of his passing was shared on one of his children’s Facebook account. Originally from Abeokuta, Ogun State, Pa. Akinwumi was born on May 10, 1936. He resided in Ibadan until his passing.

Starting as a Civil Servant at the Ibadan Secretariat, he later traveled abroad to study Agricultural Engineering at Norway Technical College.

In 1958, while he was overseas, Akinkunmi came across an advertisement in a national newspaper calling for flag designs for Nigeria’s impending Independence from British rule.

His design was chosen as the best from about 2,000 submissions.

Originally, the flag’s design had a white band in the middle with green bands on either side. There was also a red sun with rays on the white band.

However, the overseeing committee decided to remove the sun, leading to the current flag design.

Akinkunmi’s design stood out because of its cleverness and meaning. The green bands symbolize the country’s forests and abundant natural resources, while the white band represents peace.

The flag was officially raised on Independence Day, October 1, 1960, instead of the British Union Jack.

When his design was selected, Akinkunmi received 100 pounds as a reward from the government.
