Delta Government's Impending Flood Preparedness: Lagdo Dam Release

In a proactive move to safeguard lives and property, the Delta State government has issued a strong call for residents residing in lowland and flood-prone areas to swiftly relocate to higher grounds.

The Impending Flood Threat: A Call for Preparedness

This appeal comes in light of the imminent threat posed by an impending flood, triggered by the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam into the Rivers Niger and Benue.

Prioritizing Safety: Government’s Concern for Citizens

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Festus Ekpen Ahon, voiced this concern in a recent statement issued in Asaba.

Emphasizing the significance of protecting the lives and assets of citizens residing in flood-prone regions, the state government acted upon the advisories given by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

Strategic Measures: Committee Formation for Flood Management

Ahon revealed that the Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, took decisive action by sanctioning the formation of a 14-member Flood Disaster Management Committee.

This committee, led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, is tasked with devising strategies to alleviate the expected challenges posed by the impending flood.

Educating and Empowering: The Committee’s Mandate

The committee’s primary responsibilities encompass a comprehensive sensitization campaign aimed at citizens.

It will also develop pertinent measures for both the prevention and management of flooding.

Furthermore, the committee will address the urgent matter of displaced individuals and formulate methods to provide essential relief materials to victims.

A Delicate Balancing Act: Managing Water Release from Lagdo Dam

As Ahon emphasized, “The Delta State government has been informed that the authorities of Lagdo Dam in Cameroon would be releasing modulated amounts of water into the River Benue and River Niger due to flooding caused by torrential rainfall.”

Addressing Economic and Humanitarian Aspects: Executive Council’s Actions

A secondary development arising from this situation was the Delta State Executive Council’s decision.

The council approved a substantial allocation of N10 billion for social investments, aimed at funding palliative measures.

In addition, a N40 billion credit facility offer was extended to the 25 local councils in the state.

This credit is intended to cover a significant portion of the outstanding retirement benefits owed to council pensioners.

Financial Commitment: Navigating Economic Challenges

These crucial decisions were encompassed within the framework of a N167 billion 2023 supplementary budget.

This budget was ratified during the inaugural meeting of the state’s Executive Council in Asaba.

Sonny Ekedayen, the Commissioner for Economic Planning, conveyed these developments to the press.

He stated, “This decision was reached at the state Executive Council meeting presided over by Oborevwori.”

A Path Forward: Government’s Holistic Approach

Ekedayen further noted that the supplementary budget would be submitted to the state Assembly for formal approval.

A key focal point of this budget pertains to the provision of palliatives aimed at supporting the less privileged, individuals living with disabilities, widows, women, youths, and the elderly within the society.

What You Should Know: Government’s Proactive Stance

In conclusion, the Delta State government’s proactive measures in response to the impending flood underscore its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.

By issuing timely warnings and initiating vital committees and budget allocations, the government demonstrates its readiness to address challenges posed by natural disasters, ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
