NCC Introduces 10-Digit Numbering Format for Fixed Telephone Lines

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a significant change to the numbering format for fixed telephone lines (landlines) in Nigeria.

Transition to 10-Digit Format

The NCC has officially announced that the Fixed-Lines Numbering Format in Nigeria will transition from the existing eight digits to a new 10-digit format.

This change involves adding the “02” prefix before the existing fixed numbers.

Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, made this announcement in a statement on Tuesday, September 19.

According to the statement, the NCC clarified that both old and new numbering formats will operate concurrently until the cut-over date of December 31, 2023.

Starting from January 1, 2024, the new numbering format with the “02” prefix will become fully operational.

Smooth Transition and Examples

To ensure a smooth transition, the NCC provided examples of how the new numbering format will work.

For instance, if you had a fixed number like 09461700, you will need to dial it as 02094617000 in the new format.

Similarly, for numbers in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, where the current format is 014630643, 094630643, 084460643, and 064460643, respectively, the new format will be 02014630643, 02094630643, 02084460643, and 02064460643.

It’s important to note that this change only affects Fixed Telephone Numbers, and there will be no alteration to the existing mobile numbering format.
