Seeking Justice: Mohbad's Mysterious Death Sparks Nationwide Protests

As controversy continues to swirl around the mysterious death of the young Afrobeat sensation, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, fans and supporters across Lagos, Osun, and Delta states have taken to the streets to demand justice.

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that these protests, which entered their second day, have not only captivated the attention of the public but also various stakeholders in the entertainment industry.

A Call for Thorough Investigation

The protests began in earnest on Tuesday, with hundreds of protesters converging in cities like Abeokuta, Ogun State, and Akure, the Ondo State capital, passionately seeking justice for the late singer.

Mohbad’s untimely demise at the age of 27 raised numerous questions, prompting the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to order a comprehensive investigation by the Lagos State Police Command.

In Lagos State, protesters gathered in various locations, with one rally starting from the Alagbado axis of AIT Road and making its way to the Command area, then to Ile-Iwe in Meiran.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the protests maintained a peaceful tone, accompanied by at least four police patrol vans filled with armed officers to ensure order.

Over 200 youths, dressed in black, held placards with poignant messages demanding justice for Mohbad.

The sentiment echoed in Warri, Delta State, where similar protests took place.

Osun Youths Join the Demand

Osogbo, the Osun State capital, witnessed thousands of youths flooding major roads, demanding the arrest and prosecution of those suspected to be connected to Mohbad’s death.

Dressed in black attire, they walked through several areas, including Dele Yes Sir, Dada Estate, Oke-Fia, Alekuwodo, Olaiya, and MDS, culminating in a gathering at Freedom Park.

Here, they lit candles and sang Mohbad’s songs while expressing their grievances against the Malian record label owners.

Fisayo Aderemi, one of the conveners, addressed the media at Freedom Park, urging the police investigating team to extend their scrutiny to the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s hospital treatment before his demise.

Nollywood Actress Calls Out Naira Marley

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo added her voice to the growing chorus seeking justice.

During her visit to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, she called out Malian record label boss, Naira Marley, and his associate, Sam Larry.

Iyabo Ojo asserted that there is video evidence suggesting their involvement in the saga and questioned why Sam Larry had not been summoned for questioning by the Lagos Police Command.

Falana’s Request for a Coroner’s Inquest

The law firm of Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, has also joined the call for a thorough investigation into Mohbad’s death.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada, the firm described the singer’s death as “very tragic” and “mysterious.”

They requested a coroner’s inquest to uncover the circumstances surrounding this untimely demise.

The letter emphasized the importance of conducting an inquest whenever a death occurs under violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances, as mandated by the Lagos State Coroner’s Law 2007.

ACON Advocates Suspension of Naira Marley

Amidst the ongoing controversy, the African Council on Narcotics (ACON) has advised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to suspend Azeez Adeshina Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, as its ambassador until the investigation into Mohbad’s death concludes.

ACON’s President, Rekpene Bassey, argued that brand ambassadors should reflect positive values, and Naira Marley’s public conduct raises questions in this regard.

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim Calls for Justice

Former presidential candidate and business tycoon, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has urged the police to ensure justice for Mohbad.

He stressed the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible, if any, face the consequences of their actions.

Olawepo-Hashim acknowledged that Mohbad’s tragic death highlights the pervasive influence of the underworld in society and expresses his sympathy for those mourning the rising star’s loss.

Oluwo’s Plea for Calm

Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdurosheed Akanbi, expressed his condolences and described Mohbad’s death as a significant loss to Yorubaland, Nigeria, and the entertainment world.

While urging the Lagos State Government to ensure justice prevails, he called on protesting youths to conduct themselves peacefully, expressing concern that the protests could be infiltrated by hoodlums if not properly managed.

Stakeholders are working diligently to ensure justice for Mohbad, and cooperation from the youth is crucial.
