Touchaheart – In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Governor Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, overturning the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that invalidated his victory.
On Friday, a five-member panel of justices unanimously agreed that the lower court erred in its interpretation of the alleged reduction of 165,616 votes in favor of Governor Yusuf.
The lead judgment by Justice Inyang Okoro also stated that the issue of Governor Yusuf’s membership was a pre-election matter.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has put an end to the legal challenges against Governor Yusuf’s election, which had been contested by the opposition party, the APC.
The ruling also reaffirmed the principle that the nomination or sponsorship of a candidate for an election is entirely the responsibility of the political party, as stipulated by Section 177(c) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 134(1) of the Electoral Act.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has been hailed by Governor Yusuf’s supporters as a victory for democracy and justice.
