President Tinubu Appoints Maj. Gen. Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

Touchaheart Nigeria– In a recent move by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede has been appointed as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

This temporary assignment follows the illness of the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who is presently abroad for medical treatment.

This update was revealed on Wednesday, October 30, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Onanuga confirmed that Oluyede’s tenure as acting COAS would remain effective until Lagbaja’s anticipated return.

The 56-year-old Oluyede, a seasoned officer within the Nigerian Army, has a distinguished career, previously serving as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps, stationed in Jaji, Kaduna. Oluyede and Lagbaja share a longstanding connection as members of the 39th Regular Course, and both were commissioned as second lieutenants in 1992, with seniority backdated to 1987. In September 2020, Oluyede rose to the rank of Major General, marking a notable milestone in his career.

Throughout his military service, Oluyede has occupied numerous critical roles within the Nigerian Army, showcasing a range of command and leadership skills.

His experience includes positions as Platoon Commander and Adjutant at the 65 Battalion, Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion, Staff Officer for the Guards Brigade, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.

Known for his dedication and leadership, Oluyede’s temporary appointment as acting COAS underscores President Tinubu’s trust in his capacity to uphold Nigeria’s security responsibilities during this period of transition.

He said;

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).”

“Oluyede will act in the position pending the return of the indisposed substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Until his appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.

“The 56-year-old Oluyede and Lagbaja were course mates and members of the 39th Regular Course. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1992, effective from 1987. He rose to Major-General in September 2020.

“Oluyede has held many commands since his commissioning as an officer. He was Platoon Commander and adjutant at 65 Battalion, Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, Staff Officer Guards Brigade, Commandant Amphibious Training School. He is married and has three children.”
