TOUCHAHEART– well-known California chef has been arrested after allegedly carrying out three separate bank robberies in San Francisco within one day, according to police reports.
Valentino Luchin, 62, a former executive chef at San Francisco’s iconic Italian restaurant Rose Pistola, allegedly robbed three banks on September 10 by handing handwritten notes to tellers demanding money.
Police officers were dispatched to a bank near Grant Avenue in Chinatown shortly after 12 p.m. in response to a robbery report involving a suspicious suspect demanding cash.
A teller told officers that the suspect presented a note demanding money, and fearing for her safety, she complied. After receiving a bag of money, the suspect escaped.
Authorities did not disclose the exact amount of cash stolen during the robbery. The suspect’s quick escape left investigators working swiftly to trace his movements across the city.
The San Francisco Police Department’s Robbery Unit quickly identified Luchin as the prime suspect in the heist. Investigators linked him to two other robberies committed in the Central District that same day.
Detectives determined similarities between the descriptions of the suspect and his robbery methods, which helped strengthen the case against Luchin as the perpetrator of all three robberies.
Officials noted that SFPD “ambassadors” and community tips played an important role in identifying the suspect, which ultimately led to the chef’s arrest later that day.
“Officers determined that the suspect who committed these robberies was Luchin,” police stated in their official report confirming the arrest of the former executive chef.
Authorities developed a tactical operation that enabled officers to apprehend Luchin without incident. He was taken into custody later that day and booked at the San Francisco County Jail.
Luchin now faces two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery. The former chef remains in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings and formal charges.
This case is not Luchin’s first alleged bank robbery. He was previously arrested in 2018 for robbing a Citibank branch in Orinda, where $18,000 was stolen.

After his arrest, Luchin admitted in a jailhouse interview that desperation over his failed restaurant Ottavio drove him to rob the bank in a “bad plan.”
“I thought it was a good plan, but it was not,” he said, adding that he never intended harm. “My action wasn’t aggressive. It was a fake gun.”
Luchin also stated that he wrote an apology letter to the teller he allegedly threatened during the Orinda robbery incident, expressing regret for his actions.
It remains unclear whether Luchin was formally charged or convicted for the 2018 bank robbery, despite his admission and evidence gathered by investigators at the time.
Born in Italy’s Veneto region, Luchin moved to the United States in 1993, quickly earning acclaim as a rising star in the American culinary industry.
Following the closure of Ottavio in Walnut Creek, which ended in 2016, Luchin claimed he was left with severe financial burdens that triggered his downward spiral.
“Everything went downhill,” Luchin told East Bay Times. “Everything became more complicated.” He admitted desperation pushed him into decisions he never believed himself capable of making.
Bankruptcy filings from 2015 revealed Luchin and his wife owed more than $111,000 while holding assets valued at only $27,000, deepening their financial struggles before the robberies occurred.
