Nnamdi Kanu ditches lawyers to fight his own case

Nnamdi Kanu shocks Nigeria by taking over his defense, calling governors and ministers as witnesses.

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has made headlines by deciding to represent himself in his high-profile terrorism trial.

This unexpected move came after his lead lawyer, former Attorney General Chief Kanu Agabi, withdrew from the case during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The drama escalated when Nnamdi Kanu confirmed from the dock that he’s taking full control. He even turned down the judge’s offer to appoint a new lawyer, showing his determination to steer his own defense.

Nnamdi Kanu wasted no time in his new role. His first act? Questioning the court’s right to try him on the seven terrorism charges brought by the Nigerian government. Held since 2021, he’s pushing back hard against the accusations.

To build his case, Nnamdi Kanu has filed a motion listing 23 heavyweight witnesses. These include big names like Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and former officials such as ex-Attorney General Abubakar Malami and retired Army Chief Gen. Tukur Buratai.

He’s asking for subpoenas to bring them all in, claiming their testimonies will prove his innocence. Plus, Kanu wants more time—90 days instead of the original six—to wrap up his defense, given the star-studded lineup.

Why this Kanu’s twist matters now

Nnamdi Kanu’s self-representation could shake up the trial, drawing eyes from across Nigeria and beyond. As IPOB’s face, his bold step highlights ongoing tensions over Biafran independence and government crackdowns.

Will these VIP witnesses flip the script? Stay tuned as this story develops—it’s got all the makings of a legal thriller!
