PERSIAN GULF—The United States Navy has deployed its most advanced directed-energy weapon in live combat for the first time, using the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance (HELIOS) system to destroy Iranian drones threatening American assets in the Persian Gulf. The operation, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, represents a decisive turning point in how the U.S. military counters the growing threat of unmanned aerial vehicles in contested waters.
Footage released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and reported by the New York Post shows the HELIOS laser system mounted aboard a Navy destroyer, unleashing a sustained beam that ignites and disintegrates multiple Iranian-launched drones mid-flight. The destroyer, operating within range of Iran’s coastline, engaged the drones without expending a single conventional round — a logistical and tactical advantage that defense analysts say could redefine modern naval engagements.

The HELIOS system, developed by Lockheed Martin under a contract worth approximately $150 million, fires a concentrated beam of infrared energy capable of disabling or destroying targets at the speed of light.
Unlike traditional surface-to-air missiles, which cost between $1 million and $3 million per intercept, each HELIOS laser shot costs roughly $1 in electricity — a staggering economic asymmetry that gives U.S. forces an enduring advantage against swarm drone tactics.
Iran’s Drone Threat: A Growing Strategic Challenge
Iran has dramatically escalated its use of unmanned aerial vehicles since 2023, supplying Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and its Revolutionary Guard Corps with low-cost Shahed-series drones.
The Pentagon reported that Iranian-linked forces launched more than 200 drone and missile attacks against American and allied positions across the Middle East in 2024 alone, killing three U.S. service members and injuring dozens more.
Each interception using conventional systems drained Navy and Army missile stockpiles at an alarming rate.
Defense policy experts argue that the stakes of this deployment extend far beyond the Persian Gulf.
“We have been spending Ferraris to shoot down bicycles,” said Dr. Elaine Cho, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). “HELIOS changes that calculus entirely. It gives commanders an almost unlimited magazine against drone swarms, and that is a game-changer for sustained operations.”
A New Chapter in Directed-Energy Warfare
The Navy has spent over a decade developing HELIOS after earlier prototypes, including the Laser Weapon System (LaWS) tested aboard the USS Ponce in 2014, proved the concept but lacked combat-ready power.
HELIOS now generates more than 60 kilowatts of energy, enough to burn through drone airframes and blind optical sensors at distances exceeding a mile. Its integrated surveillance suite also provides real-time targeting data, reducing the lag between detection and engagement to fractions of a second.
Not everyone views the deployment without reservation. Some arms-control advocates warn that the normalization of low-cost energy weapons could lower the psychological barrier to engagement.
“When the cost of engagement drops to a dollar, commanders face different pressures than when every trigger pull burns a million-dollar missile,” cautioned Marcus Webb, a research analyst at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. “We need robust rules of engagement to match the new technology.”
What Comes Next
The Pentagon has confirmed that at least two additional destroyers in the Fifth Fleet are scheduled to receive HELIOS installations by mid-2026.
Meanwhile, the Navy’s next-generation system—the 150-kilowatt High Energy Laser Counter-ASCM Program (HELCAP)—is already in advanced testing and promises to engage larger, faster threats, including cruise missiles.
Operation Epic Fury may ultimately be remembered not for the drones it destroyed but for the era it launched—one where the fundamental economics of air defense shifted irrevocably in America’s favor.
