On Monday, January 17, back-to-back earthquakes slammed the west of Afghanistan, killing at least 22 people.
The 4.9 and 5.3 magnitude quakes struck the northwestern province of Badghis, causing home and building collapses, according to data from the US Geological Society (USGS).
Four children were among those found dead in the rubble, according to an AFP spokesperson.
They went on to say that around 700 homes had been harmed.
The first quake struck in the afternoon, followed by the second two hours later. It had the greatest impact on the Qadis and Mugur districts.
Officials have cautioned that as rescuers comb through the rubble in the remote region, the death toll could rise.
