Coal Generates Over One-third Of Germany’s Electricity

Although coal is Germany’s most important energy source for electricity generation, renewable energy sources have recently grown in importance.

Touchaheart reports that more than half, or 52.9 percent, of the total generated electricity volume of 143.8 billion kilowatt-hours came from conventional energy sources in the first quarter of 2022.

Coal, natural gas, and nuclear power are among the energy sources, according to estimations issued by the Federal Statistical Office on Wednesday.

According to the office, renewable energies such as wind power, photovoltaics, and biogas provided 47.1 percent.

While the amount of electricity delivered into the system from traditional sources decreased by 8% over the same period last year, renewable energy sources increased by 21%.

Coal was the most important energy source in the first three months of this year, accounting for 31.5 percent of total electricity generation.

In comparison to the same quarter previous year, the amount of coal-fired electricity in German systems climbed by 12.5%.

In Germany’s first quarter, wind power, the second most important energy source, provided 30.1 percent to electricity generation.

According to the statisticians, the fact that wind power grew by 28.8% in a year was mostly attributable to the fact that the first quarter of 2021 was rather windless.

Natural gas-fired power generation declined by 17%, while nuclear power fell by 49%.

As a result of the nuclear phase-out, nuclear energy now only contributes for 6% of total electricity put into the grid, whereas natural gas now accounts for 13%.
