See Why VP Osinbajo Explains Why He Got Surgery In Nigeria

Although the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was recommended by his doctors to consider having surgery to repair a fracture on his right femur (thigh bone) overseas, he insisted on using a Nigerian hospital and medical professionals.

Some of the Vice President’s government and private practice doctors suggested traveling abroad because it is frequently considered by patients in this class and can occasionally seem more convenient, according to sources close to Duchess International Hospital, where the surgery was performed on Saturday.

But one of the doctors who coordinated the whole operation, Dr. Yemi Onabowale, who is the founder of the Reddington Hospital, was quoted to have said “the VP was clear that he had confidence in Nigerian doctors both at home and abroad and would prefer they handle the operation.”

Some voices in the healthcare industry have expressed enthusiasm at Prof. Osinbajo’s decision, which is also seen as a huge support for the government’s frequently declared goal of reversed medical tourism.

He is reportedly alleged to have stated that doing the surgery in Nigeria would not only support Nigerian medical professionals, who are among the best in the world but would also assist build capacity inside the country.

After a successful procedure, Prof. VP Osinbajo was wished a speedy recovery by the Federal Executive Council, or FEC.

Yesterday in Abuja, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), delivered a statement in which FEC expressed its goodwill.

Mustapha claimed that a group of specialized doctors in Lagos carried out the surgical procedure, which may have been connected to a chronic squash injury.

“As Prof. Osinbajo recuperates from the surgical operation, FEC wishes him quick recovery to continue to give the needed support for the overall growth and stability of the country, “ Mustapha said.
