Paris 2024 Olympics: 4 Athletes To Get ANOCA Athlete Support Scholarships

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has switched gears to ensure another podium finish after Team Nigeria excelled at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where it topped the African medals table. To this end, the NOC has secured scholarships for its athletes to compete at the Olympics in Paris in 2024.

The NOC has announced the names of the most recent four recipients of the ANOCA Athlete Support Program for PARIS 2024, all of whom are considered potential competitors for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The recipients were announced as Enekwechi Chukwuebuka (Athletics), Kolawole Esther Omolayo (Wrestling), Ogbonne Eze Joy (Weightlifting), and Olarinoye Adijat Adenike (Weightlifting) by Engr Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and Treasurer-General of ANOCA.

Gumel claimed that the money will help them achieve their ambition of competing in the Olympics.

The Commission based the allocation process on performance factors as well as sports and Olympic principles, which resulted in the 50 athletes chosen by ANOCA including the four athletes from Nigeria.

The ANOCA Athletes’ Support Programme seeks to offer assistance to elite athletes who have the ability to qualify for and perform admirably in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

The Commission recommends that NOCs use part of the grant for their athlete support and preparation activities.

Throwing more light on the ANOCA Athlete Support Programme for Paris 2024, NOC Scribe, Banji Oladapo said; “Chasing an Olympic dream takes incredible determination and talent – these four athletes have all demonstrated they have what it takes. But they also need support to train, compete and maximize their performance opportunities around the world to provide the best opportunity to represent Nigeria at the Paris Games”.

It will be France’s third occasion ever to host the Olympics at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, also known as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Paris will be the second city, after London in 1908, 1948, and 2012, to host the Games for the third time. The Games were first held in the French capital in 1900, and then again in 1924.

There will be 32 sports on the Olympic schedule, including breaking, or as we know it, break dance. Following their great debuts in Tokyo, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing are back.

The Games will start in earnest on July 26, 2024.
