ISWAP is to blame for the attack on the Owo Church- National Security Council

National Security Council says ISWAP was behind the attack on the Owo Church.

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that the Federal Government claims that the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, southwest Nigeria, was planned by the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

This online news portal knows that the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced this on Thursday, June 9, 2022, when briefing state house correspondents at the conclusion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s national security council meeting.

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that the minister, who was briefed alongside Alkali Baba Usman, the Inspector-General of Police, said the police had been ordered to pursue and prosecute the perpetrators of the act.

He stated that the imprint of ISWAP was discovered at the scene of the attack, and that they would be prosecuted.

ISWAP’s goal, according to the minister, is to use the attack to divide Nigerians and create the perception of an ethnoreligious conflict.

On Sunday, June 5, gunmen opened fire on the church, killing many parishioners and injured several others.

According to reports, the attackers ignited explosives inside the church before firing multiple bullets at the congregation.

The governor of Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu, had described the attack as an “attempt to test the will of the people of the state and indeed, the south-west”.

“At Owo, the anger was palpable. The tension was at an abrasive level just as the urge for reprisals was high,” he said.

“Without doubt too, the ripple impact of this heinous act, as well as the understandably angry reaction across the state, could not have been different.

“To me, this is an attempt to test the will of the people of the state and indeed, the south-west.”
