Bondi Beach Attack: Ten Dead at Hanukkah Event

Tragedy Strikes Sydney in Bondi Beach attack as gunmen target Hanukkah celebration at iconic beach

Ten people were killed in the Bondi Beach attack during the Hanukkah Jewish celebration on Sunday. The attack targeted a Hanukkah celebration with approximately 2,000 attendees.

One gunman was killed and another is in critical condition. Additionally, eleven people were injured, including two police officers.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 PM local time during “Chanukah by the Sea.” This event was organized by Chabad of Bondi for families celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing hysterical screams as people fled in all directions. However, witness Harry Wilson described a horrific scene with multiple people on the ground surrounded by blood.

Video footage captured the chaos. One clip showed a bystander tackling a gunman and wrestling away his weapon. Another showed officers attempting to resuscitate individuals on a pedestrian bridge.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes “shocking and distressing.” Emergency responders immediately deployed to save lives and secure the area.

Police established an exclusion zone around Bondi Beach. Specialist officers examined suspicious items found nearby. Two individuals were taken into custody as investigations continue.

    Community Impact

The attack deeply affected Australia’s Jewish community. Moreover, it occurred during a sacred moment meant to celebrate light and hope during Hanukkah.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned what he called a “cruel attack” on Jewish people celebrating their holiday. Opposition leader Sussan Ley noted the violence struck an iconic Australian location.

The Jewish community expressed profound grief over this tragedy. Families gathering for a peaceful celebration found themselves caught in violence.

Mass shootings remain extremely rare in Australia. The country implemented strict gun laws following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.

However, this incident recalls the 2014 Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney. That standoff left two hostages and the gunman dead after 16 hours.

Bondi Beach is normally heavily policed and considered safe. Consequently, this attack shocked locals and visitors alike.

    Investigation Ongoing

Authorities continue working to determine the attackers’ motives. Furthermore, police have not officially confirmed whether the event was specifically targeted.

The Australian Federal Police are coordinating with NSW Police. Officials promise updates as more information becomes confirmed and verified.

Meanwhile, the community mourns those lost in this senseless act. The investigation will determine full circumstances surrounding this attack.
