Russian President Vladimir Putin Has Declared A Cease-fire In Ukraine

In Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called a cease-fire.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said today, Saturday, March 5, 2022, that it would halt its bombardment of portions of Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate safely.

“Today, March 5, from 10 a.m. Moscow time, the Russian side declares a ceasefire regime and opens humanitarian corridors for the exit of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” said the ministry in a statement. “Humanitarian corridors and exit routes have been agreed with the Ukrainian side.”

With the continuous strikes on civilians in Ukraine, Western officials have seen a shift in Russian tactics from military objectives to civilians, with increased attacks focusing on population centers, according to this online news outlet.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to achieve the quick victory he desired, the Russian military has confronted fierce and tenacious Ukrainian resistance across the country.

A little more context: On Thursday, the second round of negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegates took place in Belarus. After the meeting, a Ukrainian negotiator stated it didn’t produce the outcomes Ukraine required because both sides had agreed on corridors for civilians to flee.

On Friday, March 4, 2022, Putin informed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that the third round of discussions will take place this weekend.
