Gladbach were leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo in the second half when linesman Christian Gittelman was hit from behind by a beer cup with 19 minutes remaining.

After a few minutes, the stadium speaker announced that the game had been postponed owing to a crowd-thrown object.

Although the official appeared to be unharmed, referee Benjamin Cortus chose not to continue the game, and the players were given three minutes to leave the field.

The Gladbach players returned to the field 15 minutes after the object was hurled to salute their traveling supporters.

About 15 minutes after the incident, the game was called off and fans were instructed to leave the stadium.

“We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelmann,” Bochum tweeted on their official Twitter post.

“A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan.”
