The Electoral Act Amendment Bill has finally been signed into law by President Buhari.

After much delay and protests, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has finally signed the election act change bill into law.

The signing ceremony for the electoral act reform bill was place at the federal executive council (FEC) chamber in the presidential residence in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Friday, February 25, 2022, according to this online news source.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, were all present at the signing ceremony of the electoral act amendment bill (NGF).

After being modified by both chambers of the national parliament, the measure was sent to the president on January 31.

Touchaheart Nigeria recalls that after the national assembly made direct primary mandatory for political parties in the country, President Buhari first rejected the law.

The measure, according to the president, “violates the spirit of democracy.”

The law was reworked in the senate and house of representatives to include indirect and direct primaries, as well as consensus candidates.

Parties can now elect their candidates for any election organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission using any of the three ways outlined above (INEC).

The electoral act amendment bill includes new measures for electronic transmission of election results.
