Covid-19: WHO Warns People Not To Take Omicron Mildly

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that The World Health Organization (WHO), an arm of the United Nations, has warned against labeling the Omicron version of Coronavirus as “moderate,” claiming that it is killing people all over the world.

Recent studies suggest that Omicron is less likely to make individuals extremely unwell than previous Covid versions like Delta, according to scientists.

However, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus claims that the high number of patients infected with the variation has put health systems under significant strain.

According to the WHO, global infections have surged by 71% in the last week, while cases in the Americas have increased by 100%. According to the report, 90 percent of serious cases worldwide were unvaccinated.

“While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild,” Dr Tedros told a press conference on Thursday, January 6.

“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people.

“In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.”

Dr. Tedros reiterated his requests for increased vaccine distribution to assist impoverished countries in immunizing their populations.

According to him, 109 nations would fall short of the WHO’s aim of 70 percent of the world being fully vaccinated by July, based on current vaccine deployment.
