Fire In New York Apartment Kills 19 People, 9 Of Them Were Children

A fire in a New York apartment building has killed at least 19 people, including nine children, according to officials.

 

Touchaheart Nigeria reports that on Sunday morning, January 9, a fire broke out in a 19-story structure in the Bronx’s poorest neighborhood.

 

After inhaling smoke from the fire, more than 30 persons are suspected to have suffered severe damage to their airways.

The fire is thought to have begun in a duplex unit on the second and third levels and did not spread to the other apartments.

 

It took the efforts of 200 firefighters to put out the fire and save the victims, with 26 of them in serious condition. According to the fire department.

In photos of the victims, an eight-year-old child is seen being supplied oxygen through a mask while lying lifeless on a stretcher.

 

Others depict a woman bent over on the floor, her face nearly completely obscured by soot.

 

The incident was classified as a five-alarm fire, the most serious category, by the New York Fire Department (FDNY).

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, according to the FDNY, although it is not believed to be suspicious.

 

On Saturday morning, another Bronx apartment building had to be evacuated due to a fire triggered by an e-bike battery that extended from the second to the top story.

There were no significant casualties recorded, although numerous apartments were severely damaged.
