Timothy Weah joined Juventus from Lille on Saturday, following in his father’s footsteps into Serie A.

“Timothy Weah has officially joined Juventus.” “The American joins on a permanent basis from Lille,” said the Italian club in a statement.

The 23-year-old will replace Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado, who is set to leave as a free agent. He is the son of 1995 Ballon d’Or winner and current Liberian President George Weah.

Weah senior played for Monaco, PSG, and AC Milan, where he won league titles in 1996 and 1999 and was Africa’s top scorer in Serie A until last season, when Victor Osimhen surpassed him.

After a difficult season, his son, who has played 29 times and scored four goals for the USA, is Juve’s first new signing of the summer.

Juve finished seventh in Serie A after a 10-point deduction for illegal transfer activity, which means that despite earning a spot in the Europa Conference League, they may not play in Europe next season.

UEFA could ban the Turin giants from Europe for a season for allegedly misleading European football’s governing body when negotiating a “settlement agreement” following Financial Fair Play rules.

Juve are hoping to hire Cristiano Giuntoli as their new sporting director, the man who built a series of strong Napoli teams, including last season’s Scudetto winners, while also balancing the books.

Giuntoli has one year left on his contract with Napoli, but he wants to run the summer transfer window for Juventus, who have lost money for five years in a row and whose most recent annual accounts showed a loss of 254.3 million euros ($277.4 million).
