Touchaheart Nigeria reports that a controversy has emerged at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) involving President Yakubu Maikyau and his predecessor Olumide Akpata. President Maikyau accused Olumide Akpata of fraud.
The controversy centers on President Maikyau’s alleged nepotism in appointing his nephew as the IT Manager for the NBA portal. This move was criticized by many professionals in the field.
In a recent report presented at the 2023 pre-Annual General Conference in Abuja, President Maikyau labeled the NBA App introduced by Olumide Akpata as a significant fraud.
During Olumide Akpata’s final days as NBA President, he unveiled the NBA App at the 2022 Annual General Conference in Lagos. The digitized NBA concept garnered praise and acceptance from the association’s members. However, President Maikyau’s administration holds a different view.
President Maikyau not only referred to the NBA App as fraudulent but also informed the National Executive Council (NEC) members in Abuja that the company behind the app had received a 27 million Naira deposit. Despite this payment, the company had failed to brief him, the new NBA President, about the app’s progress.
“The very first thing I encountered with these IT people was with the issue, remember last year at the conference, there was a supposed launch of the NBA App. That thing was a fraud.” the NBA President told NEC Members.
The NBA President also accused Rotimi Ogunyemi Esq, a member of the NBA Digital Committee, of sending false instructions to Paystack. These instructions were meant to change the NBA email on the payment platform and replace it with a new one.
The President questioned why a lawyer on the Digital Committee would try to control NBA payments by pretending to integrate a Paystack account with the digital NBA App.
President Maikyau also explained to NEC members why he hired his nephew, Solomon, as the new IT consultant for the NBA.
