Breaking: MTN Finally speaks on cancelling customers’ debt
MTN Nigeria has notified subscribers about technical issues on Saturday that resulted in the inadvertent cancellation of debts for some users.
Consequently, customers who had borrowed airtime or data from MTN might need to repay the debt on their accounts since the initial cancellation was a result of an error in the MTN system.
This is even as subscribers, who believed the telecom operator deliberately cancelled their debts, have gone to social media to jubilate and appreciate the telecom company.
Meanwhile, a response from MTN reads:
“System glitch impacting balance enquiries
“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc can confirm a system glitch impacting balance enquiries. As a result, some customers may receive error messages showing that their balances have been cleared.
“This is not the case and all balances will reflect accurate figures once the problem is resolved. Our engineers are currently working to ensure this.
“Please accept our apologies. We regret the inconvenience.
Thank you”.
This shows that users would still be responsible for paying the ostensibly cleared bills even after MTN fixes the problem that caused the debts to vanish from their accounts.

The telecommunications giant, MTN, has initiated debt collection from numerous customers in Nigeria.
Earlier today, Saturday, November 11, 2023, users reported instances where MTN cleared their debts, including a debt of N5000, as observed by many.
The details of the act are yet to be known as of the time of writing this report, but it is said to be a strategic business move by MTN, aiming to encourage users.
MTN users who are owing can check if their debt is cleared by dialing *310#.
Meanwhile, the decision of MTN has generated discussions on various social media platforms while many are thanking the telecom giant others are calling for an explanation.
